The Light India initiative is a project to plant 100,000 churches in India by mid-2012. The training of the trainers is mainly completed and the grassroots training events just began in the fall of 2009. With a $1.3 million budget, the cost per church comes out to a mere $13. This has led some to refer to the project with the label, "3 latte church plant" since the cost of starting a new church is the same as buying three lattes at your favorite coffee bar. At the time of this writing, there remains a need for $734,000 of the budget to be raised.
The churches being planted are tied together in a new consortium which is supported with training and materials in an ongoing effort to see the new churches become a transformational force in the communities they serve. The project is taking place in every district and taluk in the country with more than 2,000 training sites planned.
This is truly a project where an investment yields a lot of "bang for the buck!"
